Introduction
Microsoft has announced the retirement of Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online.
From 1 October 2026, EWS will be disabled by default, and from 1 April 2027 it will be permanently retired.
Customers using Exchange Online (Microsoft 365 / Office 365) with any Spindle Document Distribution product (version 8.15 to 10.15) must apply the required update to ensure emails continue to be sent successfully.
To support this change, Draycir has created a patch that updates Spindle Document Distribution to use Microsoft Graph for email delivery.
Applies to
Users of the MS Exchange device with Exchange Online/365 with any of the following products:
- Spindle Document Distribution v8.15 to v10.15
- Spindle Document Distribution Cloud v10.0 to v10.15
- Spindle Document Management v8.15 to v10.14
Process
You can either apply the Exchange Patch or upgrade to v10.16 (once released)
Microsoft 365 Administrator approval
Before applying the Exchange Patch, or upgrading to 10.16, a Microsoft 365 administrator must grant administrator consent
to the Spindle Document Distribution (for MS Exchange) application in Microsoft Entra ID. This consent only needs to be provided once per tenant and will apply to all users on the tenant.
To provide consent, the administrator can open a web browser and go to https://admin-consent.draycir.com/. You will then be able to click the "Continue to Microsoft to Grant Consent" button which will redirect you to Microsoft to sign in.
Once signed in under an admin account, you will be able to review the permissions shown.
When these permissions have been reviewed and accepted, you will be redirected to a page confirming that administrator approval was successful.
You may now proceed to install the Exchange Patch, or Upgrade to 10.16 without interruption to current users.
Exchange Patch:
The Exchange Online Patch has been created to be very quick and easy to install. A step-by-step guide has been created that walks you through the installation process. Download the patch here.
Upgrading to v10.16:
Upgrading to version 10.16 will depend on which version of Spindle you have installed, however we have KBAs for each of these, and the upgrade process will not change for version 10.16.
