Applies to

Spindle Document Distribution v7 - 8.3

Spindle Document Management v7 - 8.3

Spindle Document Distribution v8.4 and later

Spindle Document Management v8.4 and later

Problem

When sending a print job to Spindle Pro Auto the following dialogue box appears as Spindle cannot parse the ## commands through

This is caused by the way in which the source PDF has been created, by default Spindle Professional contains code that will attempt to analyse the text in the PDF as individual characters (or glyphs), however, in certain environments, this code can prevent the PDF document from being parsed correctly.

Solution

In March 2019, Draycir released Spindle Document Distribution and Spindle Document Management v8.4 which includes a new module entitled "PDF to Spindle" This module allows a user to drop a PDF document or a ZIP archive containing PDF documents into a nominated folder, from which Spindle Document Distribution will extract and process the documents. This functionality allows users of cloud packages to use Spindle Document Distribution to distribute their documents.

For this reason the recommended solution as of March 2019 is to upgrade Spindle Document Distribution to v8.4 or later

Alternative to upgrading

If upgrading is not possible in the immediate term, then changing or adding a registry key may resolve the issue, depending on the other variables,

You will be required to add the following key in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Draycir\Spindle Professional\Generic\Configuration\
"Adobe Glyph Fix"=DWORD:00000000

As this setting is stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, it will have to be done on for each user on each machine. For larger sites with multiple users this can be added using Group Policy, or deployed via login scripts.

Default Setting

This setting was introduced in version 5.86. If the key is not present in this version, the software uses a default value of 0 (disabled).

From version 6.11 onwards, the default value has been set to 1 (enabled).

To avoid any doubt, we recommend adding this key and setting its value explicitly, if there are any issues with reading commands from PDF documents.

Important Note

Spindle Professional and Spindle Document Management have been written to understand the layout of PDF documents printed from Adobe Reader 8 onwards. However, the most recent version of Adobe Reader supported is Adobe Reader DC 2018.009.20044, which can be downloaded from Adobe's public FTP site here:

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/AcrobatDC/1800920044/

If you have issues with Spindle Professional or Spindle Document Management 'reading' PDF documents and you are using Adobe Reader DC 2018.009.20050 or later, please downgrade to the version linked above.
