Introduction
This article discusses the removal of legacy (basic) authentication for Sharepoint Online by Microsoft, what this means for customers, and our plan to resolve the issue.
What has changed?
Microsoft permanently removed legacy (basic) authentication for SharePoint Online on 1 May 2026.
What this means for you
If you are using Spindle Document Distribution version 10.16 or below, including as part of Spindle Document Management, your SharePoint Online integration can no longer connect to SharePoint Online using legacy authentication.
Our Solution
Draycir has developed a new SharePoint Online integration using modern authentication, included in version 10.17 of:
- Spindle Document Distribution
- Spindle Document Distribution Cloud
- Spindle Document Management
Version 10.17 is being made available from 5 May 2026 as an early access release for customers affected by the SharePoint Online authentication change.
This release has been prioritised to restore SharePoint Online connectivity using modern authentication. A full general release is planned following our standard release process.
To arrange your upgrade, please contact support@draycir.com and our team will be in touch to schedule it.
Prerequisite – Microsoft 365 administrator approval is required
Admin Consent link: Admin Consent - Spindle Document Distribution
Before the updated SharePoint Online integration can be used, your Microsoft 365 administrator must grant consent to the Spindle Document Distribution (for MS SharePoint) application using the Admin Consent link above.
Additional prerequisite if using Exchange Online
If you are upgrading from a version earlier than 10.16 and use Exchange Online to send emails from Spindle Document Distribution, your Microsoft 365 administrator must also grant consent to the Spindle Document Distribution (for MS Exchange) application using the Admin Consent link above.
This is required because Microsoft is retiring Exchange Web Services (EWS), and the upgraded version uses Microsoft Graph for Exchange Online email functionality.
Temporary Workaround
KBA-01-02-063 – Temporary Method for SharePoint Online
Please note that this is not a direct SharePoint Online connection. It allows documents to be archived to a file system location temporarily. Once your upgrade to version 10.17 is complete, those archived files can be copied and processed for upload into SharePoint Online.
